Daniel 9:24–27: seventy sevens, anointed ones and the final week
A phrase-by-phrase companion that makes the disputed decisions in Daniel’s seventy weeks visible.
Verse 24 · Seventy sevens and six purposes
The Hebrew expression is commonly rendered seventy weeks or seventy sevens. Reading a seven as a cycle of years yields 490. Keep the stated people and holy city beside the number. The verse’s purposes concern the resolution of wrongdoing, righteousness, vision and anointing; a calendar diagram should explain how its proposed ending relates to those purposes.
Verse 25 · The word to restore and rebuild
The beginning is described as the issuing of a word concerning Jerusalem’s rebuilding. The verse does not hand a modern reader a Gregorian date. Interpreters propose different referents, so write the source for any proposed decree or prophetic word. A date chosen because it produces a desired ending reverses the direction of the argument.
Verse 25 · Seven and sixty-two
Seven sevens yield 49 and sixty-two yield 434 when the unit is years. Together they yield 483. The JPS presentation separates seven sevens before an anointed leader from sixty-two during rebuilding. Other readings join the intervals toward a messianic terminus. Compare punctuation and translation before assuming both presentations make the same claim.
Verse 26 · An anointed one is cut off
The expression anointed one requires interpretation in context; the term is not by itself a proper name. Rashi and Christian commentators identify figures differently. The same verse describes destruction of city and sanctuary by the people of a coming leader. Do not silently treat every anointed figure and every leader as one person.
Verse 27 · Covenant and interrupted offerings
The final seven involves a strengthened covenant and a cessation of sacrifice and offering for half the period. Pronoun reference matters: who is the actor, and what links that actor to verse 26? A Christ-centred reading and a future-antagonist reading answer differently. A half of seven years is 3½ years as arithmetic, but converting it into a specific number of days adds a calendar assumption.
Abomination and a decreed ending
The closing language concerns a desolating abomination and an ending decreed against desolation or its agent, with translation difficulties. Read it beside Daniel 8:13, 11:31 and 12:11 through their own addresses. A repeated expression is a reason to compare passages, not permission to collapse every interval into one modern date.
A clear result from a difficult passage
Make a two-column note headed stated and proposed. Put the groupings and stated events in the first; place dates, named identifications and any gap in the second with their supporting commentator. This method helps a teacher explain a preferred reading honestly while keeping another learner’s questions welcome.
