QUESTION GUIDE

Does a planet’s degree tell me how far away it is?

Longitude measures direction around a reference circle, rather than distance from Earth.

Understand the idea

A degree value is an angular address. It says where a body lies around a chosen reference circle, not how many kilometres away it is. Different bodies can have similar longitudes while lying at very different distances and at different angles above or below the ecliptic. A flat chart is useful because it compresses part of that geometry into a readable map, but it leaves dimensions out. Do not treat a shared point on a diagram as proof of a physical encounter. In Babylon, the angular address can select a chamber or sector under the mapping rules. The teaching meaning belongs to that map; it is not a replacement for a three-dimensional account of the solar system. Keep direction, distance, and symbolic address distinct when explaining the diagram.

MAKE IT PRACTICAL

An example to work with

Imagine two lights seen in the same direction, one nearby and one far away. They may appear aligned even though the distance between them is large. A chart can preserve their direction while omitting their different distances.
