Solomon: an understanding heart

Wisdom begins with the request to discern and to serve.

From David to Solomon

In conventional biblical chronology Solomon follows David, approximately 970–931 BCE. This is an earlier setting than the Babylonian exile. The later use of Solomon’s voice in wisdom literature must be considered separately from the dates traditionally assigned to his reign.

What he asks for

In 1 Kings 3, Solomon asks for an understanding heart to judge the people. The request concerns discernment in a responsibility larger than himself. Wealth, a long life and victory over enemies are distinguished from the understanding he requests.

Watch what wisdom protects

The following account of two women and a child makes the consequences of judgment visible. Read the whole scene and notice the appeal to preserve the child’s life. A teaching exercise should never reenact its threat or put a learner under pressure to demonstrate love.

Bring the heart into a real decision

For Babylon, wisdom has to become a way of acting. Before deciding, ask who will be affected, what you know, what remains uncertain and what protects dignity. Choose a reversible first step when the evidence is incomplete. Authority is an opportunity for care.

Learning in the Light

In Babylon, the Father’s light opens perspective, learning and a chosen next step. Your worth remains intact. Every person is sovereign, with dignity, freedom and room to grow.
